PB&J Kisses
Loki
C/o Gabriel Duncan

The tray from breakfast lies, discarded, a few feet away. A white sheet covers the two from the waist down. Loki lies across the wolf. He nuzzles JC’s chest and scritches his white belly fur. JC slowly rubs Loki's back and they stare into each other’s eyes. They’ve been this way for two hours now. It’s probably time for lunch. They’ll get out of bed sometime. But snuggling with your mate is just too comfy to worry about things so trivial as food. JC crawls toward the edge of the bed.

“What’s up, pup?” Loki asks the wolf.

“I’m hungry,” JC replied, “Come on. Let’s get something to eat. Maybe a sandwich or something.”

The furs picked themselves off of the bed and ambled into the kitchen. Loki took out a loaf of bread and began slicing. JC set peanut butter and strawberry jelly next to Loki. He walked away to pour orange juice for himself. Loki spread out for slices of bread and spread the peanut butter methodically on the first two slices. The wolf had gulped down his orange juice and approached the lynx, his tail wagging vivaciously. He wrapped his arms around the feline’s waist. Loki smiled and rubbed his arms against JC’s. JC watched intently as Loki mad their sandwiches. When the sandwiches were finished, JC jumped back and opened his mouth expectantly.

“I thought you wanted a sandwich, wolfy!” Loki giggled.

JC made a goofy face and recoiled, “No! I wanted a sandwich.”

The lynx giggled at JC and placed the sandwich between the wolf’s teeth. JC’s paws went to his mouth, tearing away most of the sandwich and growling in a truly wolfish fashion.

“You may take the wolf out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the wolf.” Loki thought aloud.

JC smiled, muzzle smeared with jelly and smacked his lips as he chewed. The canine wiped his muzzle and tried to kiss Loki, but the feline giggled and pushed JC away.

“Eww!” Loki smiled, “Get some table manners.”

JC playfully punched Loki in the arm and they walked into another room and sat in opposing dish-shaped chairs.

“What are your hours next week?” Loki nibbled on some of his sandwich. He was careful to keep his fingers away from the gooey jelly. Jelly is so hard to get off of your hands. He goes crazy when everything he touches feels sticky and it’s because of his hands.

“I don’t know. I’ll find out tomorrow.” JC’s eyes flitted upwards in thought.

Loki took a larger bite of his sandwich. JC repositioned himself in his chair. Loki came over and sat next to him. His sandwich now sat, abandoned, on the coffee table between the two chairs. JC and Loki shared a kiss. Gentle. Loving. Perfect. Their paws met and their digits curled around each other’s. Silent communication passed between and the two stood and walked into their bedroom. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich sat, inanimate, as the two disappeared behind a door.
